Health classes explained

Four tiers—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard—explained and what pushes you from one level to another.

Term life is priced by rate class. Language shifts between companies but the rungs don't: Preferred Plus (Super Preferred or Preferred Best depending on the carrier), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then table adjustments for extra risk. Smokers and tobacco users climb a separate ladder at higher prices.

What underwriters look at

Size (height, weight), blood pressure and cholesterol numbers, family members who had heart trouble or cancer before 60, how you drive, medicines you take, what you do for work and fun, and whether you use tobacco or nicotine. The top class wants nearly spotless marks across the board; Preferred bends a little; Standard Plus and Standard welcome managed issues like blood pressure on medication.

How to use the quote tool

The health question is your self-description, and honesty matters: Excellent lines up with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, Average with Standard. Quotes match that class; the carrier sets the real class after underwriting. Uncertain? Quote two classes and look at both, then let the app make the call. A rosier class doesn't shrink the final bill—it just mangles the estimate.

Susman Insurance Agency helps you find carriers whose rules favor your situation, and that often beats chasing the lowest advertised rate.
